The 2004 Barolo Ginestra is in a gorgeous place today, as the tannins have softened yet the wine retains considerable density and freshness. Pine, mint, juicy dark cherries, smoke and licorice blossom in a rich, beautifully balanced Ginestra that holds considerable near and medium term appeal.

Monforte d'Alba. Smells warm and rich and inviting, with a note of vanilla spice sweetness. Fine and dry and just balanced though pretty grippy at the moment and finishes dry. (JH)

The 2004 Barolo Ginestra possesses greater depth and richness in is dark fruit. Sweet, balsamic notes develop in the glass, along with layers of spiciness that add complexity. This beautiful, vibrant Barolo offers superb balance and poise in a style that marries the best of the modern and traditional schools with uncommon grace. The French oak is used beautifully here.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. I have been a big fan of proprietor Giorgio Conterno’s wines for some time. Over the years these have become increasingly elegant Barolos, particularly in their refined tannins, much of which can be attributed to a more enlightened use of French oak. At press time Conterno was in the process of changing his US importer.
