The 1982 l’Eglise-Clinet predates Durantou’s arrival by a year and as such it is only a modest success. This comes from the second of two bottles I acquired many years ago for very little money. Bell pepper and remnants of brambly red fruit on the nose that has clearly lost a lot of its initial vigor. The palate is balanced, quite fleshy but very simple with a kind of half-hearted finish. Denis would have made a far better 1982, but his tenure was a year away. Tasting note taken from the Pomerol book by Neal Martin.

Somewhat past its peak of maturity, the 1982 L’Eglise Clinet reveals plenty of amber at the edge as well as a loosely knit style without the superb concentration found in just about every top vintage from the mid-nineties through 2008. It offers sweet mulberry and kirsch notes along with hints of earth, underbrush, and caramel. Drink it up. Release price: ($150.00/case)

Thick and deep with some rich fruit but overall both bottles (one was in poor condition) gave the impression of an austere wine. Furry tannins and quite hard overall. Dry and dusty. Hard. (JR)

l'Eglise Clinet

Ch. l'Eglise-Clinet is one of the most unassuming wine estates in Bordeaux. You'd probably drive past it if you didn't have prior knowledge of its vinous output. There's no ostentatious gateway nor sweeping gravel drive.
