Castiglione Falletto. Quite dark ruby. Intense, leafy sweet cherry and raspberry with a minerally layer. Lots of sweet concentration and density, and with creamy sweet oak notes on the finish. Ably made, but I don’t think it needed all that oak. Very, very long. (WS)

The 2008 Barolo Mariondino is graced with exquisite depth and definition in its dark raspberries, flowers, mint and licorice. Fleshy and radiant, the Mariondino is endowed with considerable finesse and elegance. Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet spices add complexity and nuance on the delineated finish. The Mariondino is a head-spinning Barolo.

The Mariondino is a head-spinning Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. Marco Parusso is one of the most adventurous producers in Piemonte. Never content, Parusso is willing to take more risks in the pursuit of greatness than the vast majority of his colleagues. A visit here is always fascinating because so many things are in motion. In recent years, Parusso’s biggest experiments have been with whole cluster fermentation, which is common in Burgundy, but rarely seen in Piemonte. The 2008 harvest was one of the latest on record. The fruit was brought in between October 15 and the end of the month. Importer: Montecastelli Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 414-4898

Good deep red. Menthol and chocolatey oak on the nose. Sweet and thick, but with oak currently dominating the middle palate. This too conveys an impression of heavy extraction. Where's the nebbiolo perfume and precision?
