The 1999 Côte-Rôtie is more reserved than the 1995 at first, but it repays aeration with seductive red berry fruit, briar, wild mint and garrigue scents. The palate is quite sweet on the entry with polished, saturated tannins, delivering real tension towards the finish. No, there is not an enormous amount of grip, but the refinement here is bewitching.

Mid garnet colour. Despite over two decades in bottle this wine is remarkably youthful. There are layers of game, bacon fat and savoury leather, but the underlying fruit is still evident. Fine, ripe tannins have melted away and allow the sweet and savoury elements of this wine to shine through. Hints of peppered steak and dried flowers add subtle complexity to the finish. Acidity forms the backbone and promotes the youthful, vibrant elements of the wine. Still very long, it shows how delicious these wines are in the short, medium and long term. (TP)

This gem was worth waiting for. Clearly in the zone, the wine screamed with its smoky nose filled with bouquet garni, sage, peppery red fruits, and raspberries, the wine is full-bodied, intense, long, zesty, and vibrant. There is length, purity, power, and character that does not want to stop. No decanting needed, just pop and pour, drink from 2022-2035.

Earthy, mushroom, ripe red fruit with chocolate and coffee. Finest tannin possible. Long, fragrant and still alive with acid. Black fruit on the palate, rich on the finish. Lovely undergrowth character from the bottle age. (RH)
