(made from vines ranging up to 75 years old and aged for 22 months in new French oak): Inky purple. Heady, oak-spiced aromas of dark berry compote, licorice, vanilla and mocha. Broad, fleshy and sweet, offering intense black and blue fruit flavors that are lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity. Becomes smokier and spicier with air, finishing with velvety tannins, a whiplash of vanillin oak and outstanding persistence.

The 2009 Emilio Moro Clon de la Familia comes from 25- to 75 year-old vines and is aged for 22 months in new French oak. Again, the aromatics are dominated by layers of new oak with vanilla and coconut to the fore, although it has commendable delineation and freshness. The palate is full-bodied with layers of sweet ripe black cherries, cassis and a touch of citrus fruit, while the finish has a pleasing sense of focus and poise. Drink 2013-2020. The important year for Bodegas Emilio Moro is 1932 – when the Finca Resalso vines were planted and Emilio Moro was born. For many years the fruit was sold off in bulk until 1988, when Jose Moro Espinosa invested his savings and established his own bodega, joining the D.O. the following year. I found the wines to be rich, decadent and packed to the rafters with ebullient ripe fruit. Personally, I would prefer to see less dependency on new oak, as I feel that it is masking the individuality of the terroir. If you have a pretty face – there is no need to hide it away.
