Medium red. Reticent aromas of medicinal black cherry, redcurrant, menthol and nutty oak. Distinctly clenched today and dominated by its structure. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and little in the way of easy sweetness. With 48 hours in the recorked bottle, a strong note of licorice emerged. This will require at least five or six years of cellaring.

Deep ruby-red. Liqueur-like black cherry, licorice and menthol on the rather austere nose. Concentrated, taut and extremely primary, with youthfully clenched flavors of bitter cherry and menthol. But this tactile, very long wine really saturates the mouth with flavor. "This was like a coulis of framboise at the beginning," notes Lardiere, who will wait until April or May to bottle it.

The Clos de Vougeot's 50.6ha of vineyards are divided among over 70 owners. Louis Jadot is one of the principal owners in the Clos with a 2.6ha parcel acquired in the 1980s, and further controls another 0.69ha through long-term contracts. Deeper colour than the Corton-Grèves and richer, sweeter fruit on the nose. Fine sweet cherries and just a touch of white pepper. Dry but paper fine tannin that grip quite firmly on the finish. Very youthful, good fruit depth. (JH)
