The 2008 La Gaffelière has a rather smudged bouquet that like one or two others suggests a touch of brettanomyces. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, quite reserved and linear, almost Left Bank in style except that the second half has more roundness and sweetness. It just feels a little dour compared to its peers, rather unexciting at ten years of age. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting.

Tasted blind. Deepish garnet. Smells rather suave and subtle. Sweet start is followed by fresh leafiness. Appetising. Very slightly pinched drying tannins on the end but this would drink well with food. Lacks a bit of follow through. (JR)
Dark purple. Quite intense, harmonious nose. Sweet start and then rather marked tannins. Chunky. Charred note on the end. (JR)
Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, bitter chocolate and mint on the nose. Rich and juicy, with lovely definition to the flavors of blueberry, violet, minerals and exotic spices. Finishes with dusty but ripe tannins and excellent mineral-driven persistence. Very nicely done.

Bordering both Ausone and Pavie, this property has been owned by the De Malet Roquefort line for over 300 years – making them the oldest winegrowing family in Saint-Emilion.
