Served blind after a pair of 2001 super second red bordeaux and it seemed more pinched than the clarets. Sleek, racy and fresh with a definite Italian accent – not that I guessed this one! Chosen because one of our number is an avowed fan of Italian red. (JR)

In a similar vein, the 1996 Solaia is tense and vibrant to the core. It will appeal most to readers who prefer wines with bright acidity and lively minerality.
