The 2001 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers from Gouges has an intriguing bouquet with undergrowth, autumn leaves and bay leaf scents, nicely defined if erring towards the delicate side. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a stern if not powerful entry, harmonious if missing some depth. It is carried by its balance and freshness that especially comes through on the finish. It is a wine for readers seeking “classic” mature Pinot Noir. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.

Ruby with a pale rim – still lots of colour. Lightly earthy/ferny nose. Quite a grip on the front palate and then acidity to the fore. Rather stern overall. Cries out for food. Tannins still there. Brisk. (JR)

Good medium red, not bright. Sexy scents of plum, leather, coffee and game are both lively and a bit decadent. Silky, sweet and mouthfilling on the front half, then a bit tannic and dry on the back. The acidity is more harmonious than that of most 2001s. This would be great with dinner right now, but it should continue to evolve. Gregory Gouges noted that "our control of brett is more strict today."

Ruby-red. Pure, expressive aromas of black fruits and minerals. Dense, solid and sweet, offering an enticing balance of fruit, acidity and tannins. A tad tough today in the middle, dominated by its structure, but finishes long and aromatic, with chocolatey dark fruit flavors and late-arriving, ripe tannins.
