Score 94/100 · Drink 2016-2031, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2010

The estate's 2006 Barolo Ornato expresses the power and masculinity of Serralunga in a rich, opulent style packed with dark fruit. The Ornato shows marvelous concentration and vibrancy, with added layers of dimension from the French oak. It is a fascinating wine to contrast with the straight Barolo, as each of these 2006s reveals different shade of nuance. There is a marvelous intensity to the fruit, along with substantial grip on the finish. Menthol, tar and smoke are some of the notes that remain on the close. The Ornato is aged in a mix of 70% cask and 30% French oak barrique.

Just 7-8,000 bottles, 60% clay and limestone, south facing at 370 m. Aged three and a half years in 70% new French barriques and 30% in big French casks. Headily scented. Very mild tar. Round and seductive – with a hint of oak actually, which is a bit of a shock. Fine tannins on the finish but deceptively easy to like until the end of the palate. (JR)

Serralunga d'Alba. Deep centred ruby with very small rim showing some orange. Lashes of vanilla and roasted notes, which Nebbiolo fruit doesn’t hold up to. (WS)
