Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves was lacking some complexity on the stubborn, obdurate nose. There are plenty of wet undergrowth, bay leaf notes but it needs more fruit to come through. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin and moderate acidity, however, it seems to run out of ideas two-thirds of the way through and muddles its way over the finish line. Here the oak does seem a little heavy-handed so perhaps there is some positive evolution once it is fully resolved?

Good medium red. Ripe aromas of black cherry, menthol and leather. Fat, spicy and thick, showing a silky texture to the sappy flavors of red berries and spices. Larger-scaled and more voluptuous than the 2013 version, but a touch of reduction is currently partly blocking the wine's fruit. Just a bit of hail damage here in 2013, notes Etienne de Montille.

Savory herbs, blue/black fruit, menthol, cloves and new leather all flesh out in the 2012 Beaune Les Greves. This is another surprisingly dark, concentrated wine that shows the intensity that is common in 2012. Firm tannins and graphite-inflected notes support the finish.

Two-thirds whole bunch. Bright crimson. Very direct, crystalline and with some mineral character. Fine tannins and quite silky texture. Bright red fruit and very confident. Very fresh and vibrant. (JR)
