Score 90/100 · Drink 2010-2017, Mark Squires, Feb 2010

The 2007 CHARME is my favorite since the very fine 2004. Richer, lusher and deeper than in recent vintages—and with an oak and vanilla tinge currently obvious on the wine-- it is light in color, not unusual for this wine, and very fragrant, with a hint of game. There are also obvious tannins around the edges that make the wine a bit tight at the moment, but it should come around quickly as an hour or two open helped it a lot. The finish is average and the mid-palate depth is on the lighter side, with that nod to Burgundy. My main quibble here is the oak nuance, and that really needs to integrate if this wine wants to accomplish its goals. It showed awfully well some 10 hours after being uncorked. Drink now-2017. In the right years, Niepoort is a top producer in the Douro, for both white and red, which not many can say. His wines are imported, but not in large quantities, which may be related to the relatively high price points. In his lineup this year, the Tiara and regular Redoma Branco are the sweet spots for bang for the buck. Importer: Martine’s Wines, Inc., Novato, CA.; tel: (415) 883-0400; except in New York/New Jersey: Eric Solomon, Charlotte, NC; tel. (704) 358-1565.

Very short maceration. Lots of extraction at the start, foot trodden. Made like vintage port, 100% with stems. 16 months in barriques, 50% new . Looks relatively pale. Sweet, broad and scented – very perfumed and low tannin. Almost burgundian spicy oak. Lots of sweet personality. (JR)
