The 2007 Grand Mayne is surprisingly reticent on the nose and needs more coaxing from the glass than expected. Not complex, slightly monotone, earthy in style. Maybe, it just lacks a little charm. The palate is better with firm, angular tannins. There is a bitter note on the mid-palate and just a touch of dryness on the blunt, savoury finish. Perhaps continued bottle age will help shave off its edges? Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property.

Healthy ruby. Aromatic. Rather ‘cool’ tasting. Introvert and very tight. Just a bit mean – not enough racking? Nose much more appealing than the palate. (JR)
Pretty closed on the nose with just a hint of blackcurrant. Light, fresh and dry. Slight but at least it's not forced. (JH)
