The 2001 Grand Mayne has a lively bouquet with mint-fresh red fruit leaping from the glass. It is certainly more vivacious, though not necessarily superior to the 2000. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins. Plenty of red fruit laced with vanilla and even a hint of Turkish Delight. This fans out towards the finish and delivers a lightly spiced aftertaste. Two thousand-one was always a strong follow-up to the 2000 and is maturing just as well. Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property.

Grand Mayne is one of my favorite Bordeaux estates for both high quality and good value. The 2001 does not possess the power and depth of either the 2000 or 1998, but it is impeccably well-made. Husky, but sexy, this nicely textured, dark ruby/purple-colored effort reveals hints of espresso roast intermixed with creamy vanillin, blackberries, and currants. While foursquare/monolithic, it exhibits good sweetness and purity, medium body, and ripe tannin. Give it another 1-2 years of cellaring, and consume it over the following 12-15 years.

The Nony family has been at the helm of this 17-hectare estate for three generations, since the 1930s, but it’s under Jean-Antoine – in charge since 2015 – that quality here has soared.
