Readers seeking fine Chianti Classico should check out Castello di Ama's 1997 Chianti Classico. Made from a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 12% Merlot, and 8% Caniolo whose yields were 2.4 tons of fruit per acre, this dark ruby-colored Chianti possesses a pure style, outstanding ripeness, and spicy, cedary aromas and flavors intertwined with black raspberries, cigar box, and vanilla. Dense, medium-bodied, soft, and opulent, it will drink well for 7-8 years. A Leonardo Locascio Selection, Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620

Red-ruby. Knockout nose combines blackcurrant, dried flowers, bay leaf, cinnamon and nutmeg. Multilayered, lush and deep; a voluptuous wine that avoids heaviness. Finishes with completely ripe, sweet tannins. The wine structure is currently buried under a wave of sweet, silky fruit.

Dark garnet. Complex nose balances plum, raisin, and tobacco, along with discreet oak tones. Solid on the palate; intensely flavored but a bit austere. Light spice and caramel notes. Tightly wound but built to last. Finishes with quality tannins. This is the estate "regular" Chianti Classico bottling, but quantities of the two single-vineyard selections, Bellavista and Casuccia, have been substantially cut back in order to improve this wine.
