Tasting notes
The dark-colored, structured, elegant 1998 Barolo Costa Grimaldi offers purity and harmony allied with power, density, and extract. While relatively seamless for such a young Einaudi Barolo, there is plenty of tannin underneath the glycerin and fruit. I suspect it is only a matter of time before the tannin asserts itself and closes the wine down. Rich and impressive, with no hard edges, it is built for the long haul. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2022. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900

Full medium ruby. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol. Concentrated and sweet, with strong herbal and menthol flavors dominating today. A rather tough, minty, backward Barolo; as with the set of '99s, this is currently less supple and sweet than the estate's normale Finishes with rather tough tannins.
