Tasting notes
Battely’s Rhone-like 2004 Syrah includes 5% Viognier in the blend, and spent 18 months in French oak, 25% of which was new. Its Cote Rotie-like aromas consist of spring flowers interwoven with black raspberries, cassis, and a hint of bacon fat. Full-bodied and rich with good underlying acidity, beautiful purity, and tremendous symmetry as well as balance, it is a stunning Syrah that should be even better in 3-4 years, and keep for 12-15. Kudos to owner/winemaker Russell Bourne. Importer: Dan Philips, The Grateful Palate, Oxnard, CA; tel. (888) 472-5283
