Tasting notes
The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolaia is a selection of the best lots. Solid and dark in color, its nose expresses wild cherries, kirsch, plums, tar, and minerals. Powerful and muscular, but not at the expense of the tannins’ smoothness, its sweet fruit and chocolate flavors are unending. The finish shows the freshness which is Bernabei’s signature. Drink: 2005-2016. One of the historic labels of Montalcino, this house has everything going for it – a fine name, excellent vineyards, and one of Tuscany’s most renowned consultants, Franco Bernabei. A guarantee, in short, and this year’s wines confirm it. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900

Bright, deep red. Aromas of roasted redcurrant, plum and game. Dense, fat and rich, with lush flavors of meat and earth. Could use a bit more verve and complexity, but has solid underlying structure.
