Seven Stones' 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. Rich, ample and enveloping, the 2017 soars out of the glass with stunning aromatic intensity and tons of sheer depth. Cabernet Franc accents add brightness to the dark fruit, chocolate, espresso, mint and licorice flavors. The 100% new oak is impeccably balanced. I had a chance to follow the 2017 over a number of hours, and it just got better and better with time. If opened young - which it really shouldn't be - the 2017 needs a ton of air. There is no question the 2017 Seven Stones is one of the highlights of the year.

A blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color and notes of chargrill, sautéed herbs, tilled earth, tar and fungi over a core of baked blackcurrants, crushed rocks, plum preserves and mulberries. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a firm, chewy texture and just enough freshness to support the understated fruit, finishing savory.
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is raw, powerful and not fully put together. There is no shortage of depth, that much is pretty clear. The tannins are pretty imposing at this stage, and yet it looks like the wine has enough fruit to handle all of that structural intensity. It will be interesting to see how things develop here.
