Tasting notes
(all old-vines tempranillo; aged for 32 months in small French oak, 80% of it new): Inky ruby. An expressive, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes candied black and blue fruits, incense, vanilla, roasted coffee and potpourri, along with a bright mineral overtone. Sweet, densely packed blueberry and cherry-vanilla flavors are energized by a peppery, spicy nuance that gains strength as the wine opens in the glass. Shows the richness of the vintage to excellent effect and finishes sweet, supple and very long, leaving a sexy floral pastille quality behind.

The 2009 VS is a special selection of Tempranillo from older vineyards aged for 32 months in oak barrels (80% new). It has a serious nose, complex, with plenty of spicy notes, earthy, organic aromas, ripe fruit, and exotic notes of peaches and flowers. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, with plenty of tannins and glycerin as well as some lactic notes. It is not shy in dry matter. This is a very worthy, classical Vendimia Seleccionada that reminds me of mythical vintages like 1996. Patience will get you a good payback. Drink 2015-2021. Mauro continues producing powerful, concentrated, well-oaked and true to their birthplace reds, but the big news is that with the 2013 they will release their first ever white wine! It will be a Godello from grapes grown at El Bierzo, but it will be sold, like their reds, as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon. Importer: Christopher Cannan, Europvin; www.europvin.com
