The 1990 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has appeared three or four times and testifies some bottle variation. This has a more fruit-driven bouquet compared to other vintages with copious raspberry and wild strawberry scents, pressed rose petal and orange pith, veins of blue fruit emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of red fruit, texturally showing more corpulence than the 1988 or 1993, traces of iodine towards the finish and like before, orange de sanguine lingering on the aftertaste. Superb. Tasted at The Ledbury restaurant in London.

Having tasted the 1990 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru twice before, my anticipation was tempered by my previous experiences that were not that impressive. However, this was certainly the best bottle that I have encountered. The bouquet was more precocious than previous encounters with red cherries and raspberry scents, very perfumed and floral, a winsome nose that almost leaves you giggling with pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation. Quite youthful for a 1990, it offers sweet red fruit laced with blood orange and a hint of iodine on the finish. Finally, I have chanced upon a great bottle of this rare Charmes-Chambertin from Denis Bachelet. Tasted November 2016.

Bachelet’s 1990 Charmes-Chambertin was another gorgeous wine that offered different shades of expression as it sat in the glass, revealing notable complexity and an ethereal finish.
