Of an age when J J Prüm wines begin to hit the high C… From an ugly duckling, 2004 has turned into a swan vintage, not just for Prüm, and this Sonnenuhr’s composition of herbs, minerality and fruit would turn the nose of any self-respecting wine taster. On the palate there is still plenty of bite from sound acidity, but it is the substance of flavour that impresses most. Almonds, marzipan and mint mingle effortlessly, adding superb nuances to a Spätlese which does not need tropical exaggeration, but is happy with its green and yellow local fruit display. (MS)

Wild herbs, citrus and a hint of kerosene (that's positive). More developed on the palate than on the nose but very subtle in that mature quality. Still showing grapefruit freshness and zest. (JH)

Sublime aromas of blackcurrant, passion fruit and mango are lifted by fine floral elements. The luscious peach pit fruit and silky texture are framed by finely chiseled minerality. Dense but airy, this is an almost perfect spätlese. Finishes with a stately character, excellent length and the unmistakable wild-fermentation signature of Dr. Manfred Prüm. This was one of the stars of the vintage when it was released and remains so today.

Faint signs of Riesling's characteristic developed aromas – more oily mineral than kerosene like. Spiced honey, apricot, orange but predominantly so fresh and piercing. Finishes with a savoury minerality in a smooth, caressing texture. (JH)
