Tasting notes
The 1978 Giscours is a vintage that I last drank six years earlier. It has a less rich bouquet than the '75, a little leaner and leafier, tertiary scents percolating through with time. This is typical for the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied, traditional claret in every way, with slightly dry tannins. It's probably austere for those seeking fruit, but it retains freshness and appealing classicism. Drink soon.

One of the few high point vintages in the 1970s, and this has attractive aromatics with layers of complex fruits, fragrant grilled spices and campfire smoke. Great poise, unwinds slowly, impressively deep colour, tawny edging, unforced power with mouthwatering salinity on the finish. Earthy, delicate, soot and ash, softened berry fruits, totally charming. Tari family owners.
The 1978 Giscours is another vintage that I had not tasted since way back in 2002. This was the end of a strong period for the Margaux property before matters went awry. It has an earthy, smoke and burning ember/fireside hearth scented bouquet that feels old fashioned but there is still presence and personality here. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of freshness. The acidity is well judged and whilst it is beginning to dry towards the earthy finish, there is plenty of classicism here to savor. No, not in the league of the 1961 or 1970 Giscours, but classy all the same.Tasted at the Académie du Vin dinner.
The 1978 Giscours continues to offer delicious drinking. The color is a healthy, nearly opaque dark garnet. The wine reveals a fragrant bouquet of cedar, dried herbs, black fruits, earth, and spice. It is medium-bodied, with outstanding concentration, a sweet mid-palate, and enough acidity to provide focus. This spicy, surprisingly rich as well as ripe 1978 continues to age marvelously well in the bottle. It is fully mature, but capable of lasting. Anticipated maturity: Now-2008. Last tasted 10/97
