The 2009 La Gaffelière has a rather over-the-top bouquet with smudged definition. It feels as if it underwent a warmer or longer maceration than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly viscous texture on the entry, lower acidity than many Right Banks, glossy and honeyed in texture towards the finish. Not really my style of wine, it feels cloying after a while. I much prefer the 2010 La Gaffelière that I tasted the week previously. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Tasted blind. Blackish crimson. Very obvious ripe Merlot on the nose. Fully evolved and opulent with a hint of meat extract after some notably sweet fruit. Quite ready. (JR)
Tea leaves and mellow on the nose. Round and mellow. Quite fresh. Lots of lusciousness. Firm and structured. Serious wine. Quite long. Vibrant and eminently drinkable. (JR)
80% Merlot. Dark crimson. Ripe and round on the nose. Supple and sweet. Derenoncourt burgundian sweetness. Very charming but not nearly as dense as most others. Very long and rich. Fun but less serious than most. (JR)

Bordering both Ausone and Pavie, this property has been owned by the De Malet Roquefort line for over 300 years – making them the oldest winegrowing family in Saint-Emilion.
