The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru is much more reticent on the nose compared to its peers, the fruit is subdued at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, firm grip, a little chewiness implying a heavier than necessary extraction although there is satisfying length. Just a little broad-shouldered and uncouth at the moment. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Impressive fruit ripeness on the nose, but the palate is much more restrained and there’s definite leafy bitterness undermining the finish. Pepper spice. Doesn’t have the requisite wow factor. (RH)
(not much frost here): Healthy dark red-ruby. The nose offers a tight, sappy core of medicinal red cherry, blackberry, blueberry, licorice and rocky minerality. Densely packed yet light on its feet, with its black and purple berry flavors complicated and enlivened by saline minerality. Finishes energetic and very long, with lingering salinity, the firm tannins arriving late. Superb potential from this top site.
