The 2001 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is slightly deeper than the 2002. This is more open on the nose, offering vivacious raspberry, wild strawberry, crushed stone and rose petal scents; a hint of iodine emerges with time. (Side by side, I actually prefer the focus and precision displayed by the 2000 Clos Saint-Denis.) The palate is full of sappy red fruit. There is a lovely marine influence to this wine, and a touch of piquancy toward the oyster-shell-tinged finish, although it lacks the noblesse of the very best vintages. Tasted at the Clos Saint-Denis vertical at Hide restaurant.

The 2001 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru has a delightful bouquet, beautifully defined with brambly red berry fruit, cold wet stone, pressed rose petal and a touch of bay leaf. The terroir really comes through nicely here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins and a brisk line of acidity. Perhaps it is at its peak of maturity but its almost balletic poise is entrancing. What a marvelous Clos Saint-Denis from Dujac. Will it get better? Possibly. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.
The 2001 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru from Domaine Dujac is superb, wafting from the glass with a pretty bouquet of cherry, strawberry, rose petal and hints of espresso and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, elegant and quite expansive with nice depth, an ample chassis of fine-grained tannins and deceptive length, its structural elements asserting themselves in the form of subtle grip on the finish. A great success that blossoms beautifully with air.
Pale and a little bluer than most. Complex, savoury nose with some real interest. Excellent freshness. Sweet palate entry followed by integrity and intrigue. Fine powdery tannins and masses of resolving fruit. Great energy. One of my favourite wines in this selection of 2001s. Very precise. (JR)
