Chosen because of a similarity with the 2020s served beforehand. Unusually high alcohol for the time. Intense gunpowder nose with a little volatile acidity in evidence but it didn't spoil the wine. The palate was sweet and really rather gorgeous. (JR)

This was also a terrific showing for the sensational 1937 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru, a brilliantly complex wine bursting with aromas of plum compote, sweet cocoa, incense, cedar, balsam bough and candied peel, lifted by some high-toned top notes of balsamic cherry and vanilla pod. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and satiny, with amazing mid-palate amplitude, tangy balancing acids and considerable reserves of concentration and extract. Similar in profile to the 1947, the 1937 is marginally more complex but slightly less coherent: it would be hard indeed to chose between them.
