Tasting notes
A blend of 90% Sauvignon and 10% Semillon, the 2017 Flor has a pretty, classic bouquet of crushed citrus, lemon zest, white flowers, and crushed rock-like minerality. It's clean, beautifully balanced, has nicely integrated acidity, and a clean, crisp finish. It's going to keep for upwards of a decade if you're so inclined. The 2017s from the team at Jonata are terrific across the board with all the wines showing classic, balanced characters. Unfortunately, the 2018s weren’t ready to be tasted, so I’ll report on those in next year’s Central Coast report. Readers on a budget shouldn’t miss the Todos cuvée, which is always a kitchen sink blend (it’s normally Syrah heavy) of just about every varieties Jonata works with. It’s a year in, year out, stunning wine that sells for half of what the top cuvées go for.

The 2017 La Flor de Jonata is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sémillon aged for 11 months in one-third new French oak, one-third neutral oak and one-third stainless steel. It's scented with pretty layers of yellow peach, nectarine, honey-drizzled tree fruits and dried white flowers with notes of tarragon, white pepper, beeswax, pineapple and crushed stone. It has a medium to full body with concentrated flavor layers and a broad texture, opposed by juicy acidity and finishing long, layered and textural. A great rival to white Bordeaux. 210 cases will be released this fall.
The 2017 Flor is expressive and caressing, with soft contours and terrific balance. Yellow orchard fruit, sage, mint, orange peel and apricot all meld together in a wine of superb balance and class. Quite simply, 2017 is a great vintage for Flor, Jonata's Bordeaux-inspired dry white.
