Last blend made by Giulio Gambello. Poured at a retrospective tasting going back to 1999 held in NYC. Aged 48 months. Can see and feel the heat of the summer in the dark colour and the scents of tar and roses, and an almost cherry-liqueur fruitiness riding over the sotto bosco notes. Bit more staid and dense than the others in the vertical, with some vegetal notes. (TQT)

Very pale ruby. Crushed seashells on the nose and really minerally on the palate. Cherry fruit on the finish. A little bit too medicinal for my taste, but the finish is more fragrant with supple fruit. (WS)

Quite pale ruby! Hints of savoury and sweet baking spice. A little typical on the palate with sweet strawberry and redcurrant. Elegant palate weight and lively acidity followed by quite broad aromas on the finish. Already approachable. (WS)

Poggio di Sotto's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is nicely layered in the glass. Hard candy, sweet red berries, wild flowers and mint form an attractive fabric of flavors in this silky, expressive Brunello. The volatile acidity is slightly elevated in this vintage. While VA has often been a component in these wines, in 2009 it feels a bit on the high side. It will be interesting to see how things develop here. Overall, this is a solid effort in a very difficult vintage.
