Very rich and masculine on the nose with lots of stuffing on the palate. Big, broad wine with its feet on the ground and sdtill qute marked tannins. Very Pommard – and one that insists on keeping us waiting. Solid and chewy. (JR)

From a combe high above the village, Leroy’s 2005 Pommard Les Vignots displays a fascinating nose of roasted meats and jasmine, coats the palate with polished, creamy, chocolate-covered plums and reduced meat stock, and finishes with excellent persistence, sweetness but clarity of fruit, and subtle notes of wet stone, wood smoke and flowers. Good deep red. Smoke, minerals, meat and earth on the soil-driven nose. Not a particularly fruity style, but complex, fairly rich and nicely balanced nonetheless, offering notes of smoke, earth, coffee and minerals. Rather tannic at the moment.

For many, Domaine Leroy represents the pinnacle of fine Burgundy. Owned and run by the legendary Lalou Bize-Leroy, the domaine in Vosne-Romanée is one strand of the Leroy empire, along with Maison Leroy and Domaine d’Auvenay.
