Tasting notes
(a blend of six different vineyards; "nubiola" was the original name for nebbiolo as far back as 1330, according to Pelissero) Good deep red. Enticing floral aromas of raspberry, strawberry, violet, chamomile, peppermint and cedary spices. Supple and sweet, with lovely floral lift to the black fruit flavors. Juicy and built to age but already displaying a lot of personality. The building tannins reach the front teeth. Pelissero describes this as his "by-the-glass Barbaresco," noting that it's reasonably priced. It has already been sold for that purpose to restaurateurs like Alain Ducasse and Daniel Boulud.

The 2006 Barbaresco Nubiola is a gorgeous, impeccably balanced wine. Sweet roses, dried cherries, spices and herbs are woven into a rich, textured fabric that caresses the palate with notable elegance and class. Deceptively medium in body, the Nubiola reveals gorgeous inner perfume and a long, refined finish.

As outstanding as the Barbarescos can be, I find just as much pleasure in his Dolcettos and Barberas, which are among the finest in the region. From top to bottom, this is a first-class set of wines.
