Score 74/100 · Robert Parker, Jan 2003

One of the most perplexing vintages for La Dominique, the 1985 continues to show a very vegetal character that is beginning to dissipate somewhat. The wine is loosely knit and dark garnet-colored with considerable amber at the edge. This wine seems to already be in decline. Anticipated maturity: Now – Drink up. Last tasted, 11/02.

Despite an earthy, weedy, almost vegetal nose, there's a core of concentrat ed plummy, currant fruit, sweet vanilla on the finish, velvety texture, fir m structure. This is going to be a good one, with 2-3 years' age.James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1988

The 1985 La Dominique was burdened with quite a potent bell-pepper scent that I personally found off-putting. The palate is medium-bodied but, as intimated by the nose, it feels underripe, which is odd given that this was not a particularly cool season. The finish is a bit astringent. Tasted at the Académie du Vin dinner in Bordeaux.
