The 1964 Barolo Riserva is wonderfully translucent, gracious and also positively electric. There is a touch of volatile acidity in the aromatics that is hard to fully get past. On the palate, the 1964 is much more satisfying, with layers of exotically sweet, perfumed fruit and silky tannins that give the wine its considerable allure. The 1964 can’t match the 1961, but that would have been next to impossible.

The 1964 Barolo Riserva, an ex-cellar bottle, could have passed for grand cru Burgundy in a blind tasting. It was exquisite as it revealed tons of layered fruit, superb balance and the structure and weight to drink well for at least another few years.
