Score 90/100 · Drink 2021-2023, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2023
The 2001 Relentless is a powerful, dense wine. It has certainly aged well, although some signs of maturity are creeping in, especially in the aromatics. Blackberry, gravel, game, licorice and tobacco lend gravitas to this virile Syrah-based wine from Shafer. The 2001 is starting to fray; any remaining bottles need to be finished.

(81% syrah and 19% petite sirah) Full, bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, bitter cherry, violet and sassafras. At once sweet and juicy, with supple, pliant flavors of dark berries and cola lifted by a floral component. Finishes sweetly oaky and persistent. Carries its 14. 9% alcohol gracefully.
