So complex in the nose with cascading wild-herb, citrus-zest and dried-flower aromas that are almost dizzying. In spite of the enormous depth and structure, this has very refined fruit with limey freshness that makes the super-mineral finish diamond bright. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Not from Rheinhessen but the first meters of the Pfalz, the to-be-auctioned Zellertaler 2020 Kreuzberg GG (Versteigerung) opens with a deep, clear, intense yet also refined and elegant nose that reveals beautiful limestone finesse. Pure, fresh and vital from the deepest part, this is a full-bodied, intense and tensioned limestone Riesling from a cool and windy terroir. This GG is pure and piquant, very long and intense and provided with exciting aging potential. Once again, a great dry Riesling. 12.5% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2021.
A very special site just below the Schwarzen Herrgott and labelled differently from the other GGs from this producer. 360 bottles of this wine will be offered at auction on 13 November to celebrate the anniversary of H O Spanier, local pioneer. The 2019 sold for €325 a bottle last year. This wine certainly has the tingle factor on the nose. Blossom and grapefruit are the two dominant features at this point. But on the palate there's a certain structure that reminds me of the build of a top Chassagne-Montrachet (my apologies for the burgundy analogies). Very savoury overall. No analysis was provided but this a certainly an exciting wine. (JR)
