Vajra’s 2008 Barolo Bricco delle Viole has always been gorgeous. It is all that and more on this night. A bit more polished around the edges than the Rinaldi, the Vajra nevertheless remains faithful to the style of the year. The purity of the sculpted fruit and lifted aromatics is compelling. I also noted a bit more textural weight than in the past. What a wine!

Aldo Vajra’s 2008 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is striking. Bright, focused and beautifully articulate in the glass, the 2008 captures the pure, vibrant energy of this high-altitude site in spades. It is a shame that one wine always has to go first in a tasting like this. The Bricco delle Viole is such a fabulous Barolo that it could easily be the last wine in this tasting. A few bottles opened at a charity event a few months ago stole the show. In my mind, Bricco delle Viole is one of the very best – if not the single best – Barolo in its price range.

Healthy-looking just mid ruby. Compact, sweet concentration on the nose. Very closed. Wonderful concentration on the palate, underlined by austere, muscular tannins. A little tough at the moment, and not approachable for some time. Very long. (WS)

Vajra's 2008 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is drop-dead gorgeous. Rose petals, flowers, spices and mint are some of the many, many nuances that unfold as this gracious Barolo opens up in the glass. The 2008 is at once light on its feet yet rich, deep and resonant, expressing the myriad contradictions that are at the heart of what makes Barolo one of the world's truly icon wines. Today the tannins are a little firm, of course, but there is an inner sweetness to the 2008 that is compelling. This is a fabulous showing from the Vajra family.
