Tasting notes
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru comes from 1.2-hectares of 60-year old vines. It has an intellectual, beautifully defined bouquet with "waves" of blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with orange rind, marmalade and Chinese 5-spice scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. This is a "cool" Lavaux Saint-Jacques that belies that warmth of the growing season. There is fine grip, quite a voluminous 2019 with a sinewy, quite saline finish. There is a symmetry that I love here, although the manner in which it closes down on the finish suggests that it needs 4-5 years in bottle. Superb.
