The 2013 Coutet has an attractive nose with dried honey, frangipane, rosewater and orange pith scents, blossoming nicely in the glass like a bashful child suddenly discovering their singing voice. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, lightly spiced marmalade and tangy apricot laced with white pepper on the finish. Impressive in terms of length, this Barsac is drinking well right now, but knowing Coutet's propensity to mature, will give another couple of decade's drinking pleasure.

Ch Coutet is one of the largest Barsac properties and has been owned by the Baly family since 1977. Ch Coutet is located in the south of the appellation and has 35 ha of vineyards. 75% S émillon , 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Vinification takes place in oak barrels, before 18 months' extended oak ageing. (Will Heslop) Bright yellow. Oily lanolin nose and very clean. Lovely smoothness and already approachable. Certainly delivers the Sauternes experience – and masses of sweetness. Should match many a very sweet dish. (JR)

Tasted blind. Rich aroma of apricot and orange. Luscious and viscous but seems to need a little more acidity to balance. (JH)
