Score 16/20 · Drink 2006-2016, Jancis Robinson MW, Feb 2011

There was more Merlot than in general though this was dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Quite deep crimson with rusty rim. Quite dense and dusty on the nose. Lots of freshness and fairly light and easy. More attractive than some Pauillac 1996s! Just a little austere and mealy on the finish. Not that intense. (JR)

Score 84-86/100 · Drink 2004-2012, Robert Parker, Apr 1997

Now under the ownership of the Roederer Champagne firm, the 1996 De Pez appears to be an astringently tannic wine that needs to flesh out to merit a higher score. There is attractive ripe, pure, black-cherry fruit, medium body, and good sweetness and texture, but the tannin currently dominates the wine's personality. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012.
