A very good effort from Siran, this dark ruby-colored wine offers attractive aromas of vanillin, spicy new oak, and sweet, creamy cassis fruit interspersed with subtle fennel and spice box notes. Medium-bodied and ripe, with savory richness, sweet tannin, and low acidity, this excellent, elegant Margaux is already accessible. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2014.

Massive Margaux. Best Siran since the late 1920s. Bright currant and berry aromas, with hints of mushrooms and earth. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a long, long, fruity finish. Closed, but serious. Best after 2002. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1998

The 2005 Siran, which predates the arrival of Edouard Miailhe, has a straightforward and rather simplistic bouquet—nothing bad, but it clearly doesn't have the terroir expression and complexity found nowadays. A menthol-infused bouquet introduces a quite rustic palate with a solid, black pepper- and savoury-tinged finish. Perhaps missing Margaux traits, this lacks a bit of charm.

Siran

In the south of Margaux, this property has 36 hectares of vines. There’s an unusually large proportion of Petit Verdot (13%) in the vineyard, something which the team feels adds finesse, concentration and a spicy finish to the wine.
