Full bottle 1,339 g. Cork broke on extraction so may be best to use port tongs or a Durand, if you have one. Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. Aged for 12 months in wooden vats, 36 months in oak barrels and at least 36 months in bottle. Browning garnet. Fabulous and irresistible aroma of a mature red: sweetness of leather and senescent red fruits as well as leaf mulch earthiness, and yet the perfume is lifted and sweet without excess volatility. Firm, chewy and captivating. Could only be mature Rioja with this fruit/oak sweetness and the tannins that are not bordeaux-like. Benchmark evolved Rioja but not about to fall over! Highly complex, chewy and just as captivating on the long finish as it was at first sniff. A little bit of alcoholic heat at the very end. (JH)

80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. Soft, supple but substantial. Dry, fine grained. Superb black fruit and spice – a bona fide classic. (RH)

80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. It was aged 36 months in barricas. Good to see a wine with this much age on it. Ruby with orange rim. Strawberry fruit and heat and gentle texture. Rather old-fashioned rioja. Spicy. Lots of intense fruit here that is quintessentially rioja. (JR)

The current release is the 2001 Prado Enea Gran Reserva from a vintage universally acknowledged as great in Rioja. Medium purple in color, it displays an alluring perfume of cigar box, rose petal, Asian spices, incense, truffle, and black cherry. A wine of finesse, it has a velvety texture, succulent fruit, and a lengthy, pure finish. It is approachable now but will continue to provide pleasure for another 20 years.
