Tasting notes
Dark medium ruby. Slightly high-toned aromas of cassis, licorice, crushed rock and peppery herbs. Offers good texture and density but considerably less depth than the 2009 Quella, with the black fruit and mineral flavors in need of a bit more sweetness and give. There's less buffering material here to support the dusty, serious tannins. This may be in an awkward stage today--but will it ever really expand in the bottle?

The only real disappointment in this flight, the 2008 Quella is simply not as refined as the other wines in the grouping. A slightly gamey, wild quality gives the 2008 a distinctly Old World feel. Iron, torrefaction, smoke, blood, molasses and dark spices add nuance, but the 2008 never seems to come together. The oak is overbearing, while burly edges confer an impression of rusticity. On a more positive note, the 2008 has held up well and should keep for another decade or so.

The 2008 Quella is a dark, brooding wine loaded with super-ripe dark black fruit, smoke, tar and licorice. It is a seriously intense wine that will require bottle age. This is an especially authoritative wine from Bond.
