Tasting notes
The dense ruby/purple-colored 2000 Relentless offers aromas and flavors of spicy oak, chocolate, pepper, and blackberries in a bold, dense, full-bodied, pure style. Low acidity as well as an up-front personality should provide appeal over the next 7-10 years. Tel. (707) 944-2877; Fax (707) 944-9454

This blend of Syrah with 19 per cent Petite Sirah grown in the Stags Leap district and made as a tribute to the relentlessness of Shafer's winemaker Elias Fernandez, one of the highest-profile Mexicans in the Napa Valley, is very, very deep blackish crimson. Extremely ripe, smooth, tantalisingly savoury, fullblown Syrah-ish nose. Extremely opulent with alcohol that is almost over the top but is, just, kept in check. This is essence of Napa Valley but not – hooray – Cabernet! Very convincing expression of warm climate Syrah. Maybe a tad too sweet with tannins for the moment a bit too evident. (JR)
