The 2023 Bedrock Vineyard Heritage comes from organically farmed vines planted in 1888. It’s composed mainly of Zinfandel, plus 26 other varieties including Zinfandel, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Petite Sirah and even Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose offers gobs of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry plus nuances of aniseed, tobacco and forest floor. The full-bodied palate features concentrated, spicy flavors. It’s structured by abundant, grainy tannins and mouthwatering acidity and has a long, spicy finish. It will benefit from several years in the cellar.

The 2023 Zinfandel Bedrock Vineyard Heritage comes from 29 interplanted varieties planted in 1888 in volcanic soils in the Sonoma Valley. A deep youthful magenta/ruby color, the wine is layered and reveals some profound depth to its notes of resinous menthol, fresh plum, boysenberry, pine, and iron lift. The palate is full-bodied, with notes of orange oils, plush ripe tannins, and a dark mineral profile on the back palate. Long on the palate, with a savory backbone, drink it over the next 15 years.

A big, broad and balanced wine with so much dark fruit, wild herbs and black pepper to savor. It is full-bodied, medium to full in tannins, and complex. This melting-pot wine is made from old vines on the Bedrock home property that range from zinfandel to carignane, mourvedre and alicante bouschet. Drink now or hold.

The 2023 Bedrock Heritage Wine is one of the best recent vintages of this wine I have tasted. Dark-toned fruit, lavender, chocolate, leather, cedar, menthol, licorice and pine infuse the palate with tremendous depth. This warm site clearly benefited from the colder growing season.
