Score 17/20 · Drink 2019-2030, Tom Parker MW, jancisrobinson.com, Sep 2019

East-facing terraced site, volcanic soils; first vintage 1999. In 2005 the long cool growing season led the estate to pick later than their peers in order to achieve greater sugar and phenolic ripeness. Already showing some savoury maturity, there is a sweet-and-sour note of desiccated cherry, worn leather and dried leaves. Warm and spicy on the palate, with a chalky texture that shows less tannic refinement than the 2015. Good mid-palate density of fruit still. Earthy but ripe through to the finish. (TP)

Dense, powerful and explosive, the 2005 Vecina is superb. The barest hints of aromatic development come through. Although the 2005 can probably be enjoyed now with some air, I would prefer to cellar it, as the future for this wine is unquestionably very, very bright.

Deep ruby-red. Black cherry, blueberry, licorice and minerals on the nose, lifted by a violet topnote. More densely packed and sweet than the 2006, and showing much more personality. A slightly high-toned suggestion of exotic dark berry fruits is perfectly countered by harmonious acidity that leavens the wine's sweetness. This tactile, chewy, highly concentrated wine really spreads out to saturate the palate. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins, a suggestion of chocolatey ripeness and terrific rising length. Boasts lovely definition from start to finish.

Saturated bright ruby, showing little evidence of evolution. Deep, pure, bright aromas of cassis, black raspberry, crushed rock, dusty herbs and spices; already a knockout on the nose in spite of its youth. Wonderfully plush, ripe and deep, combining a seamless texture and creamy ripeness with youthfully medicinal black cherry fruit and a hint of herbs. Finishes with noble but huge tannins, echoing and rising on the slowly building finish. Some barrel fermentation gave this powerful wine a creamy aspect.
