Last year, we offered the Robert Ampeau’s 1994 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières after it blew us away in a tasting. As a vintage, 1993 has a much better reputation – producing beautifully ripe fruit and wines. It’s no surprise perhaps that Robert Ampeau’s 1993 Lavières is superb. It has the site’s trademark florality, but with a touch of smoky reduction and a bloody, saline intensity on the nose. The palate offers impressive concentration, linear in profile, with a savoury iron-filled finish, the bit of fresh acidity, and a hint of something earthy, almost mushroom-like, alongside macerated cherries and a balsamic touch. An amazing wine that has benefited from its flawless storage.
About the producer
The epitome of old-school Burgundy, the Meursault-based Domaine Robert Ampeau crafts traditional wines, both red and white. Today run by Michel Ampeau, the property’s wines are – unlike most producers today – only released when they are ready to drink, often with 20-plus years in bottle.
