Tasting notes
From what is essentially the Sonoma side of Mount Veeder, Brion's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Moon Mountain Vineyard comes from volcanic red soils. Made by Massimo Monticelli, it's floral and delicately herbal on the nose, wonderfully complemented by cherries, cassis and gentle cedary notes. It's medium to full-bodied and silky-textured in the mouth, with a long, elegant finish. Very nice.

The only wine from Sonoma in the lineup, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Moon Mountain Estate checks in as 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 21 months in 80% new French oak. It has a stunning nose of pure red and blue fruits that gives way to more gravelly earth, purple iris, and violets, with its chocolately oak nicely integrated and firmly in the background. Medium to full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, and seamless, with ultra-fine tannins, this beautifully made Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon is approachable today yet will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and evolve gracefully over the following two decades. This is classy stuff.
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Moon Mountain District is a potent, explosive wine. Blackberry jam, cloves, new leather, menthol and chocolate are all amplified in this potent, full-bodied Cabernet. This is going to need time to soften and be at its best. This is an especially plush, heady style for the appellation, but that works just fine.
