The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy shows that incredible mix of richness and structure that seems to define this vintage. Currants, cedarwood, chocolate, and assorted tobacco notes all emerge on the nose, and this rich, mouth-filling, velvety textured Cabernet has plenty of underlying structure, as well as a great finish. As with the other 2010s here, it's clearly in its prime drink window, yet I suspect it has another 10-15 years of longevity.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon The Grand Daddy reveals classic, uplifted floral, forest floor and black currant aromatics, a creamy, full-bodied texture with terrific definition and laser-like precision, and remarkable purity, richness and overall gravitas. It can be drunk now or cellared for two decades or more. For a number of years, this has been one of most impressive portfolios in Napa Valley, and as one might expect, the 2010s are outrageous offerings. Tel. (707) 445-0311
(14.9% alcohol; from old Clone 4 vines): Bright ruby-red. Precise, high-pitched nose offers cassis, blueberry, crushed rock, licorice, violet, spices and bitter chocolate. Like a liquid confection on entry but firm mineral-driven acidity gives cut and penetration to the seamless flavors of dark berries and cocoa powder. Boasts a compellingly thick texture but manages to remain bright and light on its feet. This beautifully balanced, generous wine finishes with youthful fine-grained tannins and superb persistence.
Despite its considerable early appeal, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon The Grand Daddy is truly a wine for the future. The Grand Daddy is made in a more overt style than the O.G. Waves of sumptuous dark fruit, mocha, chocolate, sweet spices and violets all flow from the glass as this jammy, rich wine continues to open up in the glass. The 2010 shows off its dazzling richness and sheer concentration with tons of boldness. A total pleasure bomb, the 2010 is delicious today but it will be better in another few years. The Carter wines have proven to age well, and I have no doubt that will be the case here as well.
