2004 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is almost shockingly primary, with intense fruit that shrouds a powerful core of tannin. As is usually the case, the 2004 is a bit more linear and floral in its profile than the San Giuseppe, but it is every bit as impressive. Dark red cherry, plums, flowers and chalk give the finish its last burst of energy. Over time, some of the more classic, feminine Vignolo notes emerge, but it will be at least a few years before the 2004 starts drinking at its best.

More perfumed and open than the San Giuseppe Riserva and no signs of age yet. Pure cherry on the palate with loads of grainy tannins and energetic acidity. Just a little less polished and the acidity peaks more on the finish than it does in the San Giuseppe. Powerful stuff that has loads of potential. (WS)

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Vignolo impresses for its impeccable balance, silky fruit and polished tannins. This mid-weight, graceful Vignolo has already begun to shut down in bottle, but it has more than enough pedigree to age beautifully for many, many years. It is a gem from Cavallotto.
