From one plot planted to ungrafted vines, the 2019 Canta la Perdiz Reserva is silky smooth and elegant, with lovely nuances of rose petal and an enduring finesse of sophisticated red fruit. The Tempranillo is co-fermented with Bobal and Albillo, like many of the producer’s wines, but also more rarely with Carinena and Brunal, all grown in sandy, chalky limestone soils. Lengthy and focused, it’s remarkably fine and layered, with depth, quiet tannins, and well-integrated French oak, after aging 30 months. Though it’s ripe and round, it holds its weight effortlessly, feeling sublime on the palate. So beautiful, I’d hold on and drink it between 2029-2039.

The 2019 Canta La Perdiz is sourced from a 100-year-old parcel in La Aguilera, Ribera del Duero and was fermented as a field blend. Aged up to three years in well-used barrels, it appears light garnet in color. The nose unfolds mild blackberry, wild herbs, chamomile and garrigue-like aromas. Lean and dry, the taut and chalky palate is compact and fairly juicy. Its complex and subtly nuanced finish lingers.
